Canadian industrial landscape photographer Edward Burtynsky’s newest project, “Oil” has recently opened at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, along with several related gallery shows in Amsterdam, New York, and Toronto. The Corcoran exhibit is on through mid-December, after which it will travel through 2011.

I was privileged to work as a Research Associate on this project for the past three years, and attended the exhibit opening in early October: the exhibit is fantastically curated and is a must-see for all envirotechies. It should be required viewing for just about everyone everywhere. The book (tome) that accompanies the exhibit is also worth examining if you can get hold of it. Dr. William Rees (University of British Columbia, and coiner of the term “ecological footprint”) has presented a thought-provoking essay on our relationship with oil, and Michael Mitchell (Canadian author and filmmaker) has supplied some great essays on the historical and social elements of the various “chapters” in Burtynsky’s project.

For those of you unable to make the trek to see the exhibit, you can find many of the images on Burtynsky’s site under “Galleries” or by checking the second Corcoran link listed below.

The Rachel Carson Center for Environmental Studies is a joint initiative of Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich and the Deutsches Museum. Generously supported by the German Ministry for Research and Education, the Rachel Carson Center’s goal is to further research and discussion in the field of international environmental studies and to strengthen the role of the humanities in the current political and scientific debates about the environment. Special emphasis will be placed on international, comparative and historical perspectives. The Center is designed to bring together leading academics from all over the world who work on the complex relationship between nature and culture across disciplines. Individual projects will focus on different time periods and different geographic areas. The Center is named after the worldwide recognized American scientist and nature writer Rachel Carson. It is conceived as an international think tank that will discuss and analyze the role of human actors and the role of nature in this relationship. The Center’s working language is English.

Starting in August 2009, the Center will award about a dozen fellowships per year to scholars from around the globe and from a variety of disciplines. Research and writing of applicants should pertain to one or more of the topics that will be at the core of the Center’s 2009-2011 agenda:

Natural Disasters and Cultures of Risk

Knowledge and Knowledge Societies

Agrarian and Post-Agrarian Landscapes

The fellowship will usually be granted for periods of six, nine or twelve months. They can also be granted for a shorter duration or be broken up into several three-month periods.

Fellows are expected to be in residence in Munich and to work on a major research project as well as to engage with other Carson fellows, and to contribute to programs at the Center. The Carson Center will pay a fellowship that is commensurate with experience and current employment. Alternatively, it will pay for a replacement of the successful candidate at his or her home institution.

The Center will provide office space, access to some of the best libraries in Europe, research assistance, help with accommodation, and generally do everything in its power to make the tenure in Munich a pleasant and productive one.

The first deadline for applications is April 30, 2009. Applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, project description (2,500 words maximum), and three references. While applicants may write in either English or German, we recommend that they use the language in which they are most proficient. Please send applications in either PDF or Word format via email to CarsonCenter@lrz.uni-muenchen.de or via mail to Rachel Carson Center, Schellingstr. 9, 80799 München, Germany

We are looking for two persons with a doctoral degree or the equivalent who present research plans with a high degree of relevance for the appointments. The place of work for the appointments will be the Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies.

The appointees’ research programmes must be clearly linked to the research area of science, technology and environment studies, i.e. culture studies research on science, technology and the environment, relations between these areas and society as a whole. (www8.umu.se/humfak/forskning/vtm.html). One of the appointments is directed mainly towards science and technology (dnr 312-138-09); the other mainly towards the environment (dnr 312-139-09).

By way of example, the research programmes could focus on the following areas: science and communication, biofuel and climate policy, agricultural sciences, research policy and research organisation, biomedicine and genetic engineering, debates on the environment and views on natural resources, science and industry. These areas embrace main fields of study such as the history of science, environmental history, the history of technology and the history of medicine, all specialisations within the cross-disciplinary field of science and technology studies (STS), and environmental research within the arts/research on sustainable development.

The appointees will work in collaboration with other ongoing research and post-graduate programmes within the field of these appointments and will actively promote international collaboration within the research area.

The appointment as associate senior lecturer is for four years but can be extended by two years for further research. See also the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Sections 8a, 13a. The place of work for the appointments is Umeå.

Qualification requirements for the appointment are stated in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Priority will be given to candidates who have completed their degree no more than five years before the last date for application.

Because a long-term strengthening of research is an urgent priority of the Faculty of Arts, academic skills, the ability to analyse and work independently, and the candidate’s potential to develop within relevant subject areas are the most important factors for the appointment. Candidates must have an international grounding for their research, have a forward-looking view of the development of his/her subject area, and have an explicit strategy for the publication of work.

At least one long stay in a research environment abroad of relevance for the project is required. This stay abroad must be integrated into the research plan and preliminary contacts should already have been made with the intended place.

Assessment for the appointment shall be based on the degree in which a candidate possesses the skills required to qualify for appointment. Special weight shall be accorded to academic skills. Moreover, regard shall be paid to the degree in which a candidate possesses administrative and other skills of importance, taking into account the subject matter, the degree in which a candidate possesses skills in developing and managing activities and staff at the university, and aptitude in interacting with the surrounding community. Other assessment grounds are the candidate’s ability to procure external funding and an explicit plan for internationalisation.

Fulbright chair in Denmark 2010-2011

Distinguished Fulbright chair in US Environmental History / AMERICAN STUDIES

Grant Activity: The grantee would be asked to teach one 4 hour course at the MA level each term, plus one BA level course in the fall term. In the spring term, two hours would be given over to advising of students and to play a central role in organizing a major academic conference. University of Southern Denmark (SDU) will defray the costs of that conference. At the undergraduate level, courses taught are within the fields of American history, literature, and politics, as well as American Studies. At the graduate level, the MA degree in American Studies has a mix of electives and required seminars. The teaching load is 6 hours per week each term. The format is a mix of seminars, lectures, discussions, presentations and oral reports. The average course size varies according to level: graduate courses usually have 15-25 students, and undergraduate level classes have a maximum of 35 students. Students purchase their own books, which may be supplemented by materials placed on the intranet program “Blackboard.”

Specialization(s): A scholar in Environmental History or American Studies focused on the environment.

Additional Qualifications: Ph.D. and at least 6 years of teaching experience required. Aadvanced associate professor or full professors preferred.

Location(s): Center for American Studies, University of Southern Denmark-Odense

Length of Grant: 10 months
Starting Date: September 1, 2010

Comments: The Center would like to involve the Fulbright Scholar primarily in the education of its c. 45 MA students. There are also possible research opportunities. The Center is currently involved in a number of interdisciplinary research projects and the Chair would be invited to participate in these projects as well as a number of conferences and seminars the Center organizes each year. The Dean has set aside funding for a conference whose theme and participants will be shaped in a dialogue between the grantee and the faculty. The Chair will have access to a wide range of electronic journals, the university library and the Royal Library. Therefore, it will be possible to continue working on major projects. The scholar will be given an e-mail address and will have access to the usual electronic resources. Office space is provided. Some secretarial assistance is available. The university library is fully computerized and books can be ordered from any computer. In addition, American journals are available in full text format through any computer within the university network. It is possible to use PowerPoint, DVD etc. Housing will be found for the scholar and decided upon after consultation with the scholar. The cost per month including utilities is approximately $1,000-$1,500.
